telnet vs console

i've got telnet enabled from within my 192.168.*.* intranet
and would like to have the telnet sessions behave like the
consoled does--but mutt and mc* all use monochrome-like
displays even tho my settings are 'vt220' compatible. when
i use 'ls --color' the colors show up properly, just as
they do in the escape-heavy command prompt i'm using.

      telnet:        console:
mutt  monochrome     color
cmd   no ^Z          ^Z suspends

what can i do to get the telnet sessions to behave
like the console?
