Your friend probably disabled telnet in the
/etc/inetd.conf which is probably a good thing. If I
were you, I would leave it disabled . . try ssh, if
you need a Window 98 client, download PuTTY from
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/
