Another non-expert but something else to try. 8-bit can mean that you've
dropped to the text login prompt at your ISP instead of the chap/pap
handshake happening. You use the same # for ppp and manual login at your
isp?
You can try pausing your login script so the handshake can happen
by having something like this at the end of your /etc/chatscript/provider
script
