First off you can try to disable tcp timestamps with:

echo 0 >/proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_timestamps

And see if that helps. timestamps screws up VJ compression and causes
stalling.

If you are still having trouble, disable all compression options in the
ppp options file.
