It sounds to me like your kernel is crashing. This could be due to a
hardware problem, or possibly even a kernel problem.

First, try skipping that step. I belive it should be optional and you should
be able to get through the rest of the install without doing it.

If that doesn't help, you might try installing with a newer kernel. You can
get boot disks built with the 2.2.12 kernel here:
