I'd say post your query to the Toronto Linux Users Group (TLUG)
mailing-list. Its a very low volume mailing list but in the past couple
of weeks there has been some discussion about PPPoE and the whole
Sympatico ADSL thing. There are a number of very knowledgeable and
helpful people on the list who have experienced exactly what you
mentioned.

I can't offer any more help since I am using a regular PPP dialup
