There is a purpose with /etc/alternatives. You choose which
alternative you want if many exist. Lets say you later upgrades to
jdk1.2, then you just change (or dpkg will do it for you) the
/etc/alternatives/javac or you can within the blink of an eye switch
between jdk1.2 or jdk1.1 - or some other java distribution (kaffe?) by
moving the symlink.
