I had similar problems, which went away with the latest set of X font
packages (3.3.3.1-4). From it's changelog:
: * debian/xfonts-scalable.{postinst,postrm}: update-fonts-scale needs to
: be called before mkfontdir (Fixes: #38579)
So I guess the -3 packages didn't successfully register their fonts.
