I cannot hear any difference between mp3 encoded with different encoders. So for me the most usefull thing that mp3 encoder shold have, is a good encoding-speed. I found lamer to be the quickier.
lamer comes inside scEamer, a package for sending info to a shoucast server. You can find scrEamer in freshmeat.
