When I installed the debs, I am sure I saw a message that stated I had
successfully installed KDE and that I should add KDEDIR to my /etc/profile.

I will try going without KDEDIR and see what happens.

PS- on second thought, perhaps the message only said I should add KDEDIR to my
PATH and I misread it.
