Make sure "boot=/dev/hda" (or your scsi drive, whatever) is in
/etc/lilo.conf.  I had this problem as well some time back.  The original
Debian install wrote the MBR correctly, but after that I always wrote to
the boot record of /dev/hda4 (my root disk).
