Definitely worth the effort. If you don't have a CD this is the root that I hacked out
to get a reasonable smooth install.
Download the floppy disk install.
Download wvdial. The dialer to make getting on line easy.
Download Bind. The local DNS server.
Make the install set as per instructions.
Copy wvdial & bind to a disk. I think they will fit. I left mine on the hard drive.
Install from the floppy set.
dselect will run automatically. set the download install to FTP.
You will not be able to install yet as. will not have PPP and Bind setup yet. I have
both the stock stable and slink added to my list.
You can edit this list manually later or add the dist/slink/main etc. now. If you do it
now you will have to reenter all the links as it completely rewrites the field.
Alt f2 to another shell.
find the bind*.deb on the floppy or hard drive If it is on the hard drive. You will have
to mount the drive it is on.
dpkg -i bind* and answer the prompts.
dpkg will ask you if you what to start bind say yes you need this running to be able to
access the net.
Then find the wvdial*.deb
dpkg-i wvdial*.deb give it your provider phone # etc.
run the dialer
alt F1 back to dselect and check your connection. It will log into ftp.debian.org and
verify it can find the available files list
when done you are dropped by default to update file list in the main menu. do so and
replace list of files.
Select your files.
This method take a lot of time but you are on the leading edge of file concurrentsy.
I update my files once a week.
This took many failed and partial installs. but I learned setup in dos and you can't
give up. Debian Linux is by far worth the effort.
