To fix this, you should boot into single user mode.  If you use LILO to
boot, you can boot to single user by typing the word 'single' after the
name of the kernel image that you boot:
LILO boot: <image> single

The kernel will boot, then you'll be asked for the root password.  Since
xdm is now moved into a separate package, you could probably just do "dpkg
- --remove xdm" and delete it from your system if you dont' want it anymore.
Otherwise, just delete the S**xdm symlink from /etc/rc*.d.
