There's a bug in pppd that cause it to ignore efforts to tell it not to
show PAP passwords.  Comment out the 'debug' option in
/etc/ppp/peers/provider and it will stop (but so will most of the useful
pppd mesages).

I don't know why xconsole lets users see /var/log/ppp.log.  I'd call that a
bug in xconsole (I don't use it so I don't know much about it).
