Was this a DOS attack ?

Hi !

Last sunday we had a very strange problem with our web-server.

Suddenly none of the following services were available:
* Webserver (apache_1.3.3)
* SNMP
* SSH
* console login

So it seemed that the computer was freezed. But strangely the following 
services *were* available:
* ping
* pop3

As we booted the the computer everything was fine. Nothing was logged.
(i.e. since about 3h ago there were NO syslog entry)


Yesterday we had have a "similar" effekt. But this time the computer
was ok after about 5 minutes....

What can that be ?
