checkpassword and qmail-pop3d - authorization failure

Hello!

I compiled checkpassword 0.76 witch -lcrypt and put it in /bin. But it
will not work with qmail-pop3d, which is invoked 
inetd:

pop-3		stream	tcp	nowait	root	
/usr/sbin/qmail-popup qmail-popup domain.com /bin/checkpassword
/usr/sbin/qmail-pop3d Maildir

I get an authorization failure. What's wrong?

$ telnet localhost 110

-ERR authorization failed

P.S.: Why is there no checkpassword Debian package?
