I have the same problem with xmix (mixer in X). I posted a request of
help last week, and I was told that I should recompile the kernel:

:You have to compile the kernel with /dev/audio enabled.

I haven't done it yet (I'm reluctant on changing the kernel), so I don't
know whether it works with my SB16 ISA card.
