Email - can't send mail to users on local ISP

This is my first post to this list.

I have been running Debian(currently Hamm)/ Win 95/98 for over 12
months, and gradually increasing the functionality of debian and using
windows only when I have to.

My email is working fine except when I try to send messages to other
users on my local ISP.
For instance when I try to send a message to bvc@capri.net.au
I get the following message-

"An error occurred sending mail
The mail server responded:
'<bvc@capri.net.au>'<bvc@(nodomain)>not matched: (ERR_100) unknown user.
Please check the message recipients and try again"

I am using smail as my MTA.
It seems to me that my mail system is looking for a user on my machine.

my ISP is capri.net.au and I have called my machine debian.capri.net.au
