hmm "apt-get update" only gets the list of new packages from the servers
not dangerous...in fact I do it almost daily!

maybe you are thinking of apt-get dist-upgrade?
I have done this (over a 33.6 modem!) a few times. it works great too
(btw DO NOT do that right now with slink...it should be fine if you
have apt pointed to stable (hamm) but slink is a bit broken..
i did it last night and eneded up restoring from tape backup before
the night was through)
but...thats not apt's fault
