Don't use su unless it's absolutely necessary. sudo can be used to write
conffiles with a command line like this:
sudo ae /etc/fstab
substitute "emacs -nw", "pine" or whatever editor you like for "ae",
and the name of the file for "/etc/fstab". You will, of course, need to
use su to edit the sudo configuration files the first time, but after
that you can sudo.
