The June 1997 issue (38) of Linux Journal ( http://www.ssc.com/lj/ ) 
has an article that covers a number of linux and X related keyboard 
issues. 

Your solution may cause problems with the way Debian fixes motif 
Backspace and Delete. You can fix that by editing /etc/X11/Xresources.
