Help with mouse!

Hello all,

I have been struggling with getting my mouse to work for quite some time
now.  I have read the FAQ and HowTo, and think I have been doing
everything right.  But when I try out my mouse with select or start gpm I
get :

gpm: /dev/mouse:  Device or resource busy

/dev/mouse is a soft link to /dev/atibm which I made with

mknod /dev/atibm    c 10 3

I have a ATI video/mouse board, and have compiled the kernel with module
support for the atixlmouse and have loaded the module.  When I load the
module I get

ATI Inport Bus mouse detected and installed.

So things look like they're working, but still to no avail.

Important info:

   Debian 1.2
   Kernel 2.0.27
   AMD 75 MHz processor and 32Megs of RAM
