How do I install a rpm-package?

I want to install essentia-doc-3.3.2-0.i386.rpm.  According to the
debmake and alien documentation I should type
  
  alien essentia-doc-3.3.2-0.i386.rpm. 

Then alien is looking for a diff file and aborts.

  alien -n essentia-doc-3.3.2-0.i386.rpm 

does nothing (not even error messages) and so does

  alien -g essentia-doc-3.3.2-0.i386.rpm

What should I do?
