   Hello.

I am trying to track down the reason why

   messages I send to /dev/console

   have suddenly stopped appearing

when I am running in an `xterm' window

   unless I running as superuser

but continue to appear if I am not running in X.

That is, if before I crank up X I (as gonzo) do

	[gonzo]:~ echo barf > /dev/console
I get
	barf

but if I do the same thing in `xterm' I get zilch unless I do a `su'.

I don't have the faintest idea what caused this problem

or how to fix it, so even the tiniest clue will be greatly apreciated.

   Thank you.

    Cheers,
     Bill
