How can I reconfigure packages??

It happened to me, that I misconfigured some packages when
installing. Is there a way to repeat the reconfiguration step without
reinstalling the whole package?

Particularly: Is there a tool to manipulate the XF86Config file (as
xf86config from slackware)?
