umm, *NO*. That's just the wrong thing to do (and unreliable as well.)
(The killing is fine, I'm just arguing the choice of target host.)

If you're testing for the connection being "wedged" somehow, please,
it's easy enough to find the address of your provider, right? (Not
your possibly dynamic address, but the one on the other side... run
traceroute to anywhere, and see what the first hop is.) That way the
only link you're testing is the one that the hangup will fix...
