System Quit Booting
My system has had Debian installed for some time now and it has been
working very well despite my stupid mistakes. I am running kernel
1.2.13-6.
The system was working well last night when I shut it down (using shutdown, of
course!). This morning, when I booted up again (I am using a boot floppy instead
of lilo for the present) I got the following dialog when
I attempted to boot:
/etc/init.d/boot: /sbin/fsck: cannot execute binary file
fsck failed. Please repair manually and reboot.
Please note that the root filesystem is currently mounted read only. To
mount it read-write:
bash# mount -n -o remount,rw /
Control-D will reboot the system.
I obtained the same results when using my back-up boot disk.
I looked in the /sbin directory at fsck to check that the permissions still
included execute, which they did.
I have the books "Running Linux" by Matt Welsh and "Linux Unleashed." I have
tried to repair my filesystems as outlined in "Running Linux" with
no success. The other book does not even address that topic.
Many other utilities run just fine, including fdisk.
Can anyone suggest what I need to do to fix it?
