Antes de que funcione el dhcp debes de estar conectado al router. Por hacer un simil con ethernet, es como si estuvieras intentando comunicarte con el router con el cable de red desconectado.
Para manejar las conexiones wi-fi se suele usar el comando iwconfig. Si lo ejecutas veras si tu tarjeta esta instalada, si esta conectada a algun router ...
