parece que reclama que só do mouse, mas no final das contas o pau
se dá por um problema de fontes. tente instalar um servidor de fontes.
Se não me engano o nome do pacote é o xfs (X font server).
A forma mais gostosinha de configurar o X é com:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
