Não sei se vou ajudar muito, mas vamos tentar juntar os conhecimentos...
Mandar o lilo.conf para a lista também pode ajudar.

Qual é o sistema de arquivos usado? ext2 ou ext3? você tentou verificar (com
e2fsck) ? Você mudou alguma coisa no kernel? Você deu uma olhada nos arquivos
da partição? Está tudo aparentemente em ordem?

você tentou indicar o root para o kernel? Verificou que o programa /sbin/init

Sim, é normal. As partições lógicas (não sei se acontece do mesmo jeito com as
primárias) são numeradas de acordo com a ordem de criação. Isso gera umas
coisas difíceis de entender, com os números fora da ordem. Veja só:
# parted /dev/hde print
