Re: [Translation Needed]

Hi

No offence, but I really don't think missing Icelandic start buttons will be a showstopper for a new Linux distro*.

if you want to take a look, we are currently working on an Ubuntu translation,
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/+lang/is/
So if your distro gets big, we might ask for Icelandic buttons.
Until then, focus on the 10-50 biggest languages and do them well, instead of spreading yourselves too thin. You can always add the smaller ones later on.

To answer your question, I guess "Byrja" could work here, but in my old IceWM setup (WinXP theme) the "start" had been replaced by "Linux" and I always preferred that one.

*) Icelanders are, in general, very proficient in English, and I would estimate that over 99% of Icelanders prefer to use the English version of any OS (although this is often because sloppy/half-assed translations are worse than no translation at all).
So even if your distro would reach 10% of Icelanders, that's 30.000 people. If one in 100 uses the native language, that's only 300 people ever using your button.
A more reasonable number would be less than 1% of Icelanders and one in 1000 using Icelandic, giving you max 3 persons that will ever use that button.

Hi. I am working in a team that is developing a Multilingual Linux Distribution. Right now I am creating start buttons, like the Windows start menu, in native languages. Can you tell me what would be the best translation for 'Start' in Icelandic?
Thanks for your collaboration.

Icelandic word for "start" is "byrja", but I'm not sure is it OK in this context(in my opinion it is). Maby some natives will take the floor.

Kveðja
