exim4: system_aliases für root und root@localhost

Hallo zusammen,

ich habe hier eine exim4 Installation auf einer aktuellen Testing
Maschine ("server1"), die bis vor einigen Wochen auch das Tat, was sie
sollte: Lokale Mails an root über einen Eintrag in /etc/aliases
("root: root@mailserver.company.int") an root auf einem Smarthost auf
mailserver.company.int zu verschicken.

Der Alias tut es aber seit ein paar Wochen nicht mehr und der
Smarthost verweigert die Annahme der Mails an root@server1 für die er
sich nicht zuständig fühlt.

Interessanterweise wird ein Alias für root (an den z.B. cron die Mails
schickt) nicht erkannt, für root@localhost (wenn manuell getestet
kommen die Mails auch an) aber sehr wohl:

Auf einem zweiten Server ("server2") funktioniert das auch mit root problemlos:

/etc/aliases ist auf beiden Server identisch und
/etc/exim4/update-exim4.conf.conf unterscheidet sich ausschließlich
durch s/server1/server2/g voneinander. /etc/mailname ist jeweils
korrekt server{1,2}.company.int und /etc/hostname jeweils server{1,2}.

Hat jemand eine Idee woran das komische Verhalten von server1 liegen könnte?
