Seit 1973 gibt es Winchester Drives:
The significance of this product, and the reason that disk drives in

the configuration of the product. This was IBM's first drive to not 
unload the heads from the media. The Winchester technology allowed the 
head to land and take off from the disk media as the disk spun up and down.

Für mich gab es dann in den 1980-er Jahren unter UNIX den Befehl 
"shutdown....." und der hat dann alles andere, wie zum Beispiel das 
Parken der Köpfe in der Parkposition erledigt. Und selbst wenn der Strom 
ausgefallen ist, habe ich damals nie Probleme wegen einem Headcrash 
gehabt (und ich kenne auch noch die herausnehmbaren, in Luftatmosphäre 
rotierenden Scheibenstapel).
