Das hatte ich schon vorher mal geschaut - da stand nur das hier drin:

$ cat /proc/mdstat 
Personalities : [linear] [multipath] [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10] 
unused devices: <none>

Das Problem ist aber jetzt gelöst:

Erst hatte ich wie von Klaus vorgeschlagen mit dd die Platte
überschrieben (allerdings nur die ersten ~50 MB), und dann mit fdisk die
Partitionstabelle neu erzeugt. Das hat überraschenderweise auch nicht
geholfen. Dann habe ich noch mal den von Peter o.a. Befehl auf sda
losgelassen - jetzt funktioniert es.
