Ja, das wars. Die Datei hatte ich gesucht. Dort

chris           soft    core    unlimited
chris           hard    core    unlimited

eingetragen und neu eingeloggt.

Verwirrend finde ich, das  ulimit -a nicht die tatsächlichen vorhandenen Limits
anzeigt.
