Habe zu Testzwecken doch nochmal ulimit bemüht:

ulimit -v 400000  #400MB
konqueror /<Pfad zu den Pics>

Zum Schluss stürzt es jetzt zum Glück nur ab, danke dem ulimit, anstatt 
mein System mit in die Tiefe zu reißen.

Ein einzelnes Bild zeigt Konqueror dagegen problemlos an.
