Hatte das Problem auch...

bei mir fehlte in der XF86Config-4 datei die Section "Modes" , ansonsten war 
alles da... nur kam dann der Server natürlich auch nicht hoch..

Anbei das, was ich da drin habe..   ( TNT 64 vanda.. Sony 15 '' Monitor  
15sfII )   sollte bei dir auch halbwegs gehen..  oder wenn du noch ne alte 
Distribution raumliegen hast,  klause da die "Modes" .. :)
