Nedenstående er fra Debian-bug #216721. Kdm og store dele af KDE er også

This is due to the recent GNOME 2.4 upload, and fontconfig bug 216692.
Try removing the gsfonts-other pkg, and rebuilding the font cache
(dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig); or, downgrade fontconfig.
