Please update elsarticle to a newer version. The elsarticle version shipped with Debian stable (and, to the best of my knowledge, 2018.20180505-1 from Debian testing), is 1.2.0 from 2009. In the meantime, I saw version 2.0 from 2012, still available from rivervalley. The current version is 3.0 from 2018 and is available from CTAN; moreover, elsevier links to it. This update not urgent, but is clearly necessary. Thanks in advance.

Meanwhile we have:

 \def\RCSfile{elsarticle}%
 \def\RCSversion{3.2}%
 \def\RCSdate{2019/02/25}%
 \def\@shortjnl{\relax}
 \def\@journal{Elsevier Ltd}
 \def\@company{Elsevier Ltd}
 \def\@issn{000-0000}
 \def\@shortjid{elsarticle}

Therefore I close the bug.

To me it doesn't make much sense to open such kind of bugs at the Debian
bug tracker. Norbert regularly updates the Debian packages from the TL
update / CTAN. The package authors have to make sure the latest version
is no CTAN.
