Package: tetex-bin
Version: 0.9.981113-2

When I invoke xdvi I can see with xcmap that 16 colormap entries (e.g.,
from 112 to 127) are reserved in order to perform antialiasing.
Nevertheless, when I invoke xdvi again without quiting the previous
xdvi, I see that other 16 colormap entries (e.g., from 128 to 143) are
reserved. Also, both sets of entries have identical colors (eg., 118 and
134 are 9a69,9a69,9a69).

Nonetheless, colormap entries from other programs are not used although
coincident (e.g., entry 0 is 0000,0000,0000, entry 1 is ffff,ffff,ffff,
and xdvi always reserves entries for colors 0000,0000,0000 and
ffff, ffff, ffff instead of using entries 0 and 1 for them).

As a side effect, when more than sixteen xdvi's are running, the last
issue the message:

Greyscaling is running in copy mode: your display can only display
a limited number of colors at a time (typically 256), and other
applications
(such as netscape) are using many of them. Running in copy mode will
cause overstrike characters to appear incorrectly, and may result in
poor display quality.
See the section ``GREYSCALING AND COLORMAPS'' in the xdvi manual page
for more details.

when in fact 16 xdvi's are responsible of the lack of colors, and
actually display quality is rich.

Hi all

It is nearly 20 years, and I think it is time to close this bug.
First, it is not Debian nor TeX Live, but xdvi, so up-upstream.
Second, xcmap is not available in Debian, I cannot even check.
Third, who uses that old devices.

Rest in peace 35633!

Norbert
