Thanks for *this*, _much_ appreciated, I had planned to test this
at work ASAP; unfortunately, other things happened, but with today’s
sid upgrade, your MWE works.

Unfortunately, there is now another problem much earlier in the
same document, which means I cannot easily verify this fix, but
I reported this as #866116 separately.
