Package: texlive-latex-base
Version: 2014.20141024-2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I began my landscape-test.tex file with:
\documentclass[10pt,landscape,a4paper]{article}

I gave the commands:
latex landscape-test.tex
xdvi landscape-test.dvi

.
A new window opened in portrait shape.
It displayed some of the file.
There was a red border outlining an oblong,
taller than it was wide.

I would prefer a landscape shaped window,
displaying an area wider than it is tall.
I would prefer that the red outline also be wider than it is tall.
I had asked for "landscape" as advised in the book
"A Document Preparation System
LATEX
USER'S GUIDE AND
REFERENCE MANUAL"
by Leslie Lamport

I attach copies of the file landscape-test.tex
and landscape-test.fls .

The latter was produced later when I used the -recorder option.

----------

Later, I gave the command:
dvips landscape-test.dvi
.
This generated a file called landscape-test.ps.

I gave the command:
okular landscape-test.ps
.
This opened a window displaying a portrait document.
I required a landscape document.

----------

I tried using pdflatex instead,
that correctly produced a landscape output,
as seen using okular.

Thank you very much for maintaining "latex",
I find it very useful.

with best regards from
Richard Betham

Then use the proper options of xdvi.

Quoting from the UK TeX FAQ:
http://www.tex.ac.uk/FAQ-landscape.html

Another option is using pdflatex directly, as you found out:

> I tried using pdflatex instead,

Because pdflatex and pdf format contains embedded
page size dimensions, while the dvi format does not
cater for embedded paper size dimensions. They
are fixed by the driver program (like dvips etc).

Closing this bug, we are not a help desk.
