I see. Then I will almost refrain from adding to the discussion, but
point out a compromise that would have helped me already: Maybe the line
in the package description could have mentioned the dependency, e.g.

 xskak -- An extension to the skak package for chess typesetting (requires texlive-generic-extra).

But, in order to not start a discussion, feel free to leave this
suggestion unanswered and simply close the bug :-)
