Package: tex-gyre
Version: 2.004.2-4
Severity: normal

OpenType fonts cannot be embedded in PDF files prior to PDF 1.5.
Unfortunately some of the most prominent of Free Software PDF producers
for professional grade desktop publishing - Ghostscript and Scribus -
only supports PDF 1.4, forcing these tools to convert OpenType fonts to
vectors with loss of quality as a consequence:
http://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/Help:Manual_Fontsconfig#Other_notes_about_fonts_and_font_management:

Tex Gyre is a high quality font, interesting for professional DtP, but
on Debian the fonts-texgyre package provides the OpenType flavor of the
fonts, and the alternative Type1 fonts is included only in the tex-gyre
package which depends on fonts-texgyre. Additionally fonts-texgyre
ships with a fontconfig config snippet to suppress the Type1 flavor.

I argue that this is a genuine use-case for having tex-gyre installed
_without_ fonts-texgyre, and ask that the relation therefore should be
relaxed to only recommend fonts-texgyre.

You forget the ones that are really professional: xetex and luatex.

These fonts are used by default on context etc, thus the dependency
is and will remain strict.

Closing this bug.

Then you can disable the necessary fontconfig file, or report a bug
to the "professional" typesetting PDF producers that they should get
fixed.
