After changing the build script as usual I have:

hille@sid:~/luatex-0.76.0/debian/luatex/usr/bin $ ldd luatex |grep -E 'popp|zz'
        libzzip-0.so.13 => /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libzzip-0.so.13 (0xb7508000)
        libpoppler.so.37 => /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpoppler.so.37 (0xb72b6000)

We/you should consider to use them again. No, I didn't test w/ luatex
0.78.2.
