Package: texlive-xetex
Version: 2007.dfsg.2-8
Severity: normal

Hi,

I'm using xelatex to generate a beamer presentation, and I have a
problem with U+A0 non-break space.

The following example exhibit the problem:

----
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[french]{babel}
\selectlanguage{francais}
\usepackage{fontspec}

\begin{document}

% unicode non-break space (U+A0) before colon
\par Trouc :

% latex non-break space before colon
\par Trouc~:

% standard space before colon
\par Trouc :

% unicode non-break space (U+A0) between two words
\par Trouc trouc

\end{document}
----

Second and third cases work fine, while first and last don't. It seems
that xetex tries to be smart, knows that in french there should be a
non-break space before the colon and adds it. The problem is that it
adds it *even if it doesn't need to* (first case) and suppress it if it
think there's no need (fourth case).

It's a bit like if it doesn't really recognized U+a0 as a space.

I didn't yet have a chance to try with texlive 2009 so maybe it's fixed.

As a side note, the problem disappears if I don't use the fontspec
package (but then I don't have the accents). So it might be related to
this package or the font selection, I don't really know.

Cheers,

-- Package-specific info:
If you report an error when running one of the TeX-related binaries
(latex, pdftex, metafont,...), or if the bug is related to bad or wrong
output, please include a MINIMAL example input file that produces the
error in your report. Don't forget to also include minimal examples of
other files that are needed, e.g. bibtex databases. Often it also helps
to include the logfile. Please, never send included pictures!

If your example file isn't short or produces more than one page of
output (except when multiple pages are needed to show the problem),
you can probably minimize it further. Instructions on how to do that
can be found at

http://www.latex-einfuehrung.de/mini-en.html (english)

Dear bug submitter,

the bug you have submitted against one of the TeX packages concerns
not the Debian packaging of TeX Live, nor the upstream TeX Live
distribution itself, but Up-upstream, the original author of
the respective package.

TeX Live only collects what authors provide.

Thus, neither we, the Debian TeX Team, nor the Upstream TeX Live team
can fix anything regarding this bug.

Furthermore, the bug you have reported is rather old.

We suggest you to do the following:
* verify that the bug is still present with current TeX Live (2013)
  installation on Debian
* if yes, please report the bug to the *original* author of the TeX
  package, and *not* to upstream TeX Live nor Debian

Other ways to deal with these bugs are requesting help from TeX experts,
your local TeX consultant, or local TeX User Groups. One good place to
ask questions is the newsgroup comp.text.tex, or the StackExchange
website http://tex.stackexchange.com

Thanks a lot for your understanding

Norbert
