Just for completeness, I then tried updmap-sys again, which failed in the usual way.
Then also please pack up the directory /var/lib/tex-common and also send it to us.

I have been guilty of installing lots of extra font pkgs, that I probably didn't really need, but I assumed that could do no harm...?No, that should be NO problem. I have practically all font package installed that there are.
