Considering the number of .dvi.gz files shipped in Debian, I think this
is actually fairly important.
It seems probable that this is related to http://bugs.debian.org/583188
(which basically says: /usr/bin/xdvi was a perl script in TeXLive 2007,
but was rewritten in shell for TeXLive 2009, and there might be
regressions).
Also, I did actually check: it does still happen.
