Hi,
during a test with piuparts I noticed that the ancient texlive-lang-arab
from lenny may be still installed and cause problems during upgrades
(noticed during a lenny -> squeeze -> wheezy upgrade).
texlive-lang-arab was renamed to texlive-lang-arabic in squeeze, but no
clean upgrade path (by adding a transitional package) was introduced at
that time. Either a transitional package could be added now or just a
Breaks could be added to tex-common (or another package) to ensure the
obsolete package gets removed.

Sometimes, not accepting conffile updates in /etc/texmf/updmap.d
causes updmap-sys to fail. Please check for files with extension
.dpkg-dist or .ucf-dist in this directory

Did you run mktexlsr?
You can disable non-existent map entries using the option
--syncwithtrees.
