As said, combining this - which has at least some reference to TeX
shipped stuff, with ...

that that is for sure in *no* relation to TeX nor can any of the postinstall
code produce something like this unless the kernel/filesystem is broken,
I decide that this is not a bug of texlive-binaries.

Might be, but not in texlive-binaries, nor in any of the scripts
I have access to. 

Anyway,thanks for looking into it, good that the problem is solved, so
let us close this mysterious bug.

If it happens again and you can reliably reproduce it, please unearth it
again.
